Sr. Broadband Engineering Staff

What You’ll Be Doing

VPS is currently seeking a Senior Broadband Engineer to work in the Telecommunications Engineering Services Department. As a Senior Broadband Engineer, you will work with VPS telecommunications company clients, facilitating the design and deployment of broadband networks (primarily fiber cable based) that meet their long-term goals. The types of projects may include multi-year, phased construction projects; grant applications with tight deadlines; and other initiatives. This position will work as a bridge between onsite boots-on-the-ground staff, contractors, and technical engineering plans, helping bring projects from concept to fruition.

A successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of broadband network design including engineering calculations, field data collection, fiber design, and the development of material lists. Assigned projects may include construction work plans, long range strategic planning, planning studies, and sectionalizing studies for clients. A Senior Broadband Engineer can expect to communicate frequently with clients and vendors and work on multiple projects simultaneously. This position is expected to involve supervisory responsibility, including the delegation of tasks and oversite of the work of others.

The ideal candidate is organized, eager to grow, professional, and adaptable. Attention to detail and strong interpersonal communication skills are vital. The nature of the role requires a team player – meaning someone who can take ownership of assigned tasks, collaborate well with other members of the team, and proactively seeks to help team members push a project to the finish line. A successful candidate must be familiar with the design and operation of broadband systems by either being directly employed by a telecommunications company or by consulting in broadband planning and design for a telecommunications company. Preference will be given to registered Professional Engineer (PE) candidates.

  • Assisting with developing proposals, work plans, budgets, and schedules, as well as assisting with managing each element will be required.
  • The ability to apply engineering calculations to various project challenges to develop the most complete and competent design.
  • The ability to review engineering packages and reports is required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one upon hiring.

Education & Experience

  • Five (5) + years of broadband wireline distribution experience.
  • Significant knowledge of the design and operation of overhead and underground fiber to the premises (FTTP) networks.
  • The qualified candidate should be experienced with utility standards, NEC, NESC, joint facilities design, compatible units, and construction package development.
  • The qualified candidate should have prior working relationship with broadband operators in the United States.
  • Experience with optical transport networks, over the top video (OTT), access electronics, and voice switching is strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully pass clients’ background screening process.
