Wildfire / GIS Specialist

Overview:

VPS is currently seeking a Wildfire / GIS Specialist. As a Wildfire / GIS Specialist, you will work with VPS utility clients to develop comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Plans. The Wildfire / GIS specialist will work closely with utility engineering and safety personnel to gather necessary information about a power system to create assessment maps detailing areas of wildfire risk.

The ideal candidate is passionate about the environment and ready to join a team committed to working with utilities across the United States as we aim to reduce the likelihood of wildfires. Your GIS expertise will be vital in creating maps that identify areas of moderate and high risk for wildfire. These maps will allow a utility to determine an appropriate course of action depending on the environmental conditions present. Wildfire / GIS Specialists can expect to communicate frequently with clients and staff and work on multiple projects simultaneously. You will work extensively with ESRI and CAD software (ArcGIS and AutoCAD).

The ideal candidate is organized, eager to learn, professional, and adaptable. Attention to detail and strong interpersonal communication skills are vital. The nature of the role requires a team player – meaning someone who can take ownership of assigned tasks, collaborate well with other members of the team, and proactively seeks to help team members push a project to the finish line. This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS and AutoCAD
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient in managing files, drawings, and maps for report output in various formats
  • Experience in creating and adhering to quality control procedures and maintaining documented standard operating procedures
  • Ability to collaborate with team members to ensure data accuracy and project completion
  • The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
  • The ability to pass a background check/drug test/driving record check.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Associates degree with a GIS focus.
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary project teams
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record

Desired Education & Experience:

  • Experience working with public utilities and utility infrastructure
  • Ability to manage cross-divisional communication
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Familiarity with surveys, civil drawings and construction plans
