Transmission and Distribution Engineering Lead
What You’ll Be Doing
VPS is currently seeking a Transmission and Distribution Engineering Lead. As a Transmission and Distribution Engineering Lead, you will work with VPS power company clients, facilitating their design and deployment of electric power distribution systems that meet their long-term goals. The types of projects may include multi-year, phased construction projects; grant applications with tight deadlines; and other initiatives. This position will work as a bridge between onsite boots-on-the-ground staff, contractors, and technical engineering plans, helping bring projects from concept to fruition.
The Transmission and Distribution Engineering Lead will manage the design of new transmission and distribution lines. They will also review and modify existing lines to meet our client’s needs. The work also includes the specification of equipment, materials, and assemblies required to satisfy the requirements of the project.
The Lead will also be asked to develop designs that meet all NESC and RUS requirements. The Engineering Lead will be responsible for training and developing new engineers to create designs that satisfy the requirement of projects that meet all required NESC and RUS.

The nature of the role requires a team player – meaning someone who can take ownership of assigned tasks, collaborate well with other members of the team, and proactively seeks to help team members push a project to the finish line.
Skills and Requirements
Required Competencies
- Manage and coordinate multiple projects
- Stamp and approve all designs, calculations, and judgements that will be given to a client in the defined areas of expertise and fill in other areas as experience allows for applicable state(s)
- Mentor and train new engineers
- Design both overhead and underground line, while ensuring compatibility with client standards and code requirements
- Initiate and support the required permitting process, provide field support during construction
- Stay abreast of code requirements and the latest applicable technology
- Assist public utilities in developing best practices and operational directions
- Assist or oversee assisting clients with the development of standards and specifications in protection and controls
- Specify the required equipment, materials and assemblies to meet client needs
- Specify distribution protection and automation equipment
- Develop and implement the appropriate progression planning and training programs to ensure product quality and individual employee growth
- Review and approve all estimates for proposed work in the areas of protection and controls
- Establish schedules to complete assigned work within the allotted schedule and within the hours budgeted for the project
- Review and create print load drawings
- Create or modify all drawings and specifications used for line design and construction
Required Education & Experience
- Engineering degree, from an ABET accredited university, preferably with a power option.
- Current Professional Engineers License with the ability to obtain a professional engineering license in states served by VPS
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working with electric utilities
- Proven success in working with utility and construction personnel
- Experience working on multidisciplinary project teams
- Leadership skills, being able to directly supervise and mentor other engineers
- Experience using PLS-CAD and/or O-Calc for line design
- Experience researching and applying codes and ordinances
- Experience working with public utilities and utility infrastructure
- Familiarity with surveys, civil drawings and construction plans
- Experience using AutoCAD for drawing review and editing
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record
Desired Education & Experience
- The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering upon which to build.
- Must be able to successfully pass clients’ background screening process.
- Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- The ability to pass a background check/drug test/driving record check.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
